In the end, this was a B- story that should have gone through another pass and the execution needed better discipline. You could have replaced Portman and Kunis and Cassel with anyone from this film and had exactly as great a film (minus the hot lesb scene ) ) because the basics were done right. But it didn't suffer from basic mistakes like lighting and grading and it was disciplined in the basics of composition and lighting and blocking. But in that time he managed to leave himself enough room to do all of the things that the film required in post (which was a lot) as well as the inevitable tweaks that the story missed. Aronofsky did "Black Swan" in 30 days of shooting. It doesn't matter if you have the budget of "Dune" or this film, it matters what you do with it. It's not about the talent or the writing or the budget. This is an example of why it's so hard to make a good film. She's just someone who figured out what's going on 1 % more than anyone else, which leads us to believe that most everyone else was having their own rosebud moment in other realities, just maybe slightly less important than hers there's no reason to cheer for her or fear her.Ĥ. We see nothing about her that sets her apart until the last several minutes of the film, which do nothing to set her apart or make her motivations any different from anyone else in the story. The heroine (or villain) of the story stands out 0% because you tell us that she's no different. Paper characters: if all of our characters are basically different flavors of the same thing, we lose all incentive to have a champion.

Putting most of the shots on the exact same framing makes everything start to feel like it's an actor's workshop on improv even if the performances are okay, they don't feel so because we expose every crack in the performance by holding it up to the exact same framing and lighting (and when it's starkly unbalanced and occasionally overexposed it makes the performance look worse because we've lost the suspension of disbelief).ģ. We need to be able to mentally and visually breathe.Ģ: The talent needs help. You can't do hand-held in the face of talent for that much screen time. This brings us to composition: close up short focal length for 90% of the visuals is exactly one of the things that audiences hated about "Mother" (Aronofsky, 2017). I get the sense that they wanted to capture the feel of "Cloverfield" in that it's hand-held close up like someone there was shooting this but you need a reason for this and just because is not a good enough reason. The frame of the two lamps in the extreme fg is just distracting. The light intensity as well as the color and lack of grading to pull the color temp together is abysmal. You can't put your talent under 1k W sodium lamps and make people think this is natural.
Putting the two lamps on the table is both unrealistic and completely distracting to the scene, of which the first half is shot.

What this movie did wrong is lighting and framing (and composition). Here's all the reasons this movie was terrible:ġ: You can't skip the basics: Jason Bateman in "The gift" did this lighting correctly. Everything else you are saying is ignoring that basic fact. Your argument, as I understand it, is: "well yea but when they got the book it turned out it was a different kind of bomb, so it didnt help them, so its not actually clunky writing and a contrived plot point that the book exists in the story"ĭo you see how you'd be wrong about that? That is what happens in coherence, "my brother the physisist gave me a book about quantum whateverthefuck that might exlain this situation" is clunky writing.
I actually have a book about wiring a bomb onto a bus so that if it slows down it explodes, its in my bag in the back, if we can just go back and get it" and then they make efforts to go and obtain the book. If out of the blue a passenger said "hey guys this is crazy but my brother is an fbi agent and he gave me a book that might help. Look you are being ridiculous here, i cant tell if youre just fucking with me at this point.
